Seawolves Enjoy Early Success This Fall

Gianna Bomarito
Sonoma State athletics hit the ground running again this fall. The Seawolves have enjoyed tremendous success so far this season with men's and women's soccer, volleyball, cross country and men's and women's golf all in action. Cross Country runner Gianna Bomarito has continued her historic pace in her sophomore season, breaking school records and garnering accolades. Bomarito won both races she participated in this fall, first the Ash Creek Festival where she set a program record in the 5K and followed that up with a victory at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota. Bomarito was named CCAA Runner of the Week after both performances and also received USTFCCAA National Athlete of the Week honors after beating out 390 other runners at the Griak. She became the first Sonoma State runner in school history to earn National Athlete of the Week,
Men's and women's golf started the year strong with wins in their first fall tournaments. The men's team took first at the SSU Fall Invitational at Bodega Harbour with Lucas Happy winning the individual title. Happy was named CCAA Golfer of the Week for his effort while Colin Huang, Ivan Sablan and Cole Kroeker all finished in the top-5. The following week the women's team traveled to Utah and won the 54 for IX Tournament with Avery Foster finishing second overall in his Sonoma State debut. Foster was also named CCAA Golfer of the Week.
Men's and women's soccer both picked up some big results in the non-conference portion of their schedule. The men's team traveled to Canada and toppled Simon Fraser 1-0 before returning to the Bay Area and defeating Dominican 1-0. Jvon Cunningham scored the game-winner in both contests with Jack Chapman recording a shutout in goal. The women's team picked up a pair of victories as well, taking down Biola 1-0 at home and then traveling to Dominican for another 1-0 win. Claudia Janese notched shutouts in both contests and Annette Sotelo scored the lone goal in each. Sotelo was also named CCAA Offensive Player of Week with three total goals.
